Debt Super Committee -

The debt super committee has 10 days left before the November 23rd deadline.  The 12 member committee comprised of six Democrats and six Republicans must come to an agreement by the deadline or automatic spending cuts will take effect.  In addition, inaction could lead to a downgrade of U.S. debt from credit agencies.

Democrats Target Medicare Plan -

Senate Democrats are expected to vote on a house measure that would change Medicare benefits.  The move is an aggressive step by Senator Reid and Congressional Democrats.  Republicans have kept the Democrats on the defensive over the last few months regarding federal spending.

Health Care Repeal Voted Down -

The Senate voted on party lines against repealing the health care overhaul.  The outcome was expected with the final vote being 51-47.  However, there was a change made to health care law which affects small businesses.  The Senate voted 81-17 to remove a requirement that businesses file a 1099 tax form for vendors that they pay $600 or more per year.

House Health Care Vote -

The House voted 245-189 to repeal the Obama health care bill.  Three Democrats voted with Republicans and the bill will now move to the Senate.  The repeal bill still needs to pass the Democratic controlled Senate and will likely face a Presidential veto.

Beltway Business -

A recent Business In The Beltway article on Forbes discusses the priorities of the new Congress.  Republican victories in the House and Senate have changed the political landscape and are likely to shift policies on tax.  Tax will almost certainly be the top priority of the Republican House.  Democrats still have the edge in the Senate but the agenda is likely to be dictated by Republicans.

A recent Forbes article discusses the wide range of propsed taxes that may be waiting for individuals and the business community.  Election year politics may soften the tax hikes with Democrats attempting to win back voters.  Republicans are expected to oppose most tax increases by Congress.

Health Law Penalty

The Washington Times reports that 3 million Americans may be required to pay a penalty because of the new healthcare law.  Other sources indicate that the number is actually higher than 3 million.  The Congressional Budget office analysis estimates that the average penalty will be more than $1,000 by 2016.

Health Care Takes Lead -

It is expected that Republican leaders will put Health Care and the front of their election strategy.  Republican officials return to Washington this week and have the remainder of the session to implement the strategy.

Healthcare Bill Back To House -

The Hill reports that the healthcare bill is headed back to the house.  Senate Parliamentarian Alan Frumin sustained two objections by Republicans early Thursday.  The bill is expected to be passed by the House and the ruling by Frumin did not surprise officials.
