Reuters Election 2012 -

Reuters provides the latest election news and polling data for races across the country.  Current polling data on Reuters Election 2012 indicate that Obama has a 227 to 180 advantage over Romney in the electoral college.  However, most of the ten states listed as toss-ups lean towards the Republican.  A few of the toss-up states are Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia.  The four states account for 68 electoral votes.

Hatch Republican Primary -

Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch will face a primary against Dan Liljenquist.  Liljenquist received 40.8% of the state delegates to force a primary.  The Republican primary will be held on June 26th.  Orrin Hatch has served six terms in the United States Senate.

Romney Wins Close Race In Maine -

Mitt Romney held on to win the Maine caucus with 39% of the vote.  Ron Paul finished a close second with 36%.  The Romney victory ends a three state losing streak by the candidate.  There were 24 delegates at stake in the Maine Republican caucus.  The candidates will turn their focus to Arizona and Michigan which hold primaries at the end of February.

Santorum Sweeps -

Santorum swept the three contests in Minnesota, Colorado, and Missouri.  The Santorum victories have raised the possibility of a brokered convention.  Republican Presidential primaries in Arizona and Michigan are the focus of most campaigns.  The Arizona Republican primary is a winner take all contest.  There are 29 delegates at stake in Arizona and 30 in Michigan.

Gingrich Takes South Carolina -

Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina primary and has the lead in delegates for the Republican Presidential nomination.  Gingrich finished with 40% of the vote and gained momentum heading into Florida.  Romney came in second with 27% and Santorum finished in third with 17% of the vote.  The Gingrich win should help with fundraising as well as building a campaign infrastructure.  The Florida primary will be held on January 31st and is a winner take all contest.  Also, Florida is a closed primary and only Republicans are allowed to vote in the contest.  In addition, there is expected to be over 200,000 votes cast through early voting and absentee ballots.  The next Republican Presidential debate will be held in Tampa on January 23rd.  There are 50 delegates at stake in the Florida Republican primary.  After Florida, the next contests are the Nevada and Maine Republican caucuses scheduled for February 4th.

Santorum & Romney Tie In Iowa -

Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney tied in the Iowa Caucus.  Santorum finished just 8 votes behind Romney and each candidate will receive 11 delegates.  Ron Paul came in third place and garnered 21% and 3 delegates.  Newt Gingrich finished fourth with 13% and will focus on South Carolina.  Rick Perry came in fifth with 10% of the vote and will also concentrate on South Carolina.  Michele Bachmann pulled out of the Presidential race after receiving 5% in the Iowa Caucus.

Iowa Caucus -

Republicans in Iowa head to caucuses around the state today to cast their votes in the 2012 Presidential race.  Recent polling data indicates that Mitt Romney has a slight lead over Ron Paul.  Rick Santorum has placed third in numerous polls with Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich finishing fourth and fifth.  Michele Bachmann needs a strong showing to remain in the race.  Iowa Caucus results have not always followed polling data in previous elections.

Iowa GOP Caucus-

The Iowa Republican caucuses are expected to be moved to January 3rd 2012.  The date of the Iowa GOP caucus was moved after Florida set their primary date at January 31st.   The Nevada caucuses are scheduled for January 14th and the South Carolina primary is set for January 21st.  New Hampshire still needs to set a date for their primary.

Sarah Palin Will Not Run -

On Wednesday, Sarah Palin anounced that she will not seek the Republican nomination in 2012.  New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie also announced this week that he would not run for President.  The Republican field is taking shape and fundraising is expected to focus on the three main candidates.  Michele Bachmann is likely to benefit the most from Sarah Palin making an official announcement.  Romney is in a better position due to the absence of Christie in the race.  However, Rick Perry is still the frontrunner and will benefit from a solid southern vote.

Florida Moves Republican Primary -

Florida Republicans haved moved the Republican Presidential primary to January 31st.  The move is expected to cost Florida Republicans half of their delegates.  Several other states are considering moving their Republican primaries earlier in the nominating process.  The earlier primary date should give Florida more influence in the Republican Presidential race.

Florida GOP Debate -

Republican Presidential  candidates squared off last night in their third debate in less than a month.  Social security and immigration were two of the main issues discussed in the debate.  Most of the action was between frontrunner Rick Perry and his closest rival Mitt Romney.  The Republican candidates will get to meet voters again today at a CPAC event in Florida.

Tea Party Debate -

On Monday, eight Republican Presidential candidates squared off in the CNN/Tea Party Debate.  The Tea Party debate took place in Florida which is expected to be a heated primary race.  Perry maintained his frontunner status with Romney and Bachmann questioning his stance on social security.  A win in the Florida primary could give Perry the Republican nomination.

Bachmann Wins Straw Poll -

Michelle Bachmann won the Ames straw poll with 4,823 votes.  Ron Paul  came in second with 4,671 votes and Pawlenty finished third with 2,293 votes.  Rick Perry received 718 write-in ballots and is considered a top tier Republican candidate.  Perry announced that he will run for President on Saturday.

Rick Perry Set To Declare -

A spokesman for Texas Governor Rick Perry has indicated that Perry will run for President.  The Republican is expected to announce his candidacy on Saturday.  Rick Perry has a strong record as Governor and proven fundraising skills.  Perry will be a top tier candidate once he declares his candidacy.

Iowa Straw Poll -

The Iowa Straw Poll is scheduled for August 13th at Iowa State University in Ames Iowa.  The straw poll is a Republican fundraiser and very important for several candidates.  Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann are two Republican candidates that are banking on Iowa.  A poor showing for Pawlenty could derail his campaign and hurt future fundraising.
