Reuters Election 2012 -

Reuters provides the latest election news and polling data for races across the country.  Current polling data on Reuters Election 2012 indicate that Obama has a 227 to 180 advantage over Romney in the electoral college.  However, most of the ten states listed as toss-ups lean towards the Republican.  A few of the toss-up states are Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia.  The four states account for 68 electoral votes.

Arizona Republican Debate -

The four Republican Presidential candidates met for the Arizona GOP debate in Phoenix.  There are 29 delegates up for grabs in the winner-take-all Arizona primary.  Michigan is also holding their Republican primary on February 28th and will award 30 delegates.  Recent polls indicate that Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are in a statistical tie in the two states.

Florida Republican Presidential Debate -

The CNN Republican Presidential Debate is being held tonight in Jacksonville Florida.  Fireworks are expected between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.  Recent polling indicates that Gingrich and Romney are neck and neck in Florida.  The Florida Republican primary is winner take all and there are 50 delegates at stake.

Gingrich Takes South Carolina -

Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina primary and has the lead in delegates for the Republican Presidential nomination.  Gingrich finished with 40% of the vote and gained momentum heading into Florida.  Romney came in second with 27% and Santorum finished in third with 17% of the vote.  The Gingrich win should help with fundraising as well as building a campaign infrastructure.  The Florida primary will be held on January 31st and is a winner take all contest.  Also, Florida is a closed primary and only Republicans are allowed to vote in the contest.  In addition, there is expected to be over 200,000 votes cast through early voting and absentee ballots.  The next Republican Presidential debate will be held in Tampa on January 23rd.  There are 50 delegates at stake in the Florida Republican primary.  After Florida, the next contests are the Nevada and Maine Republican caucuses scheduled for February 4th.

South Carolina GOP Debate -

The South Carolina Republican Presidential debate was held last night in Myrtle Beach.  Mitt Romney is the current frontrunner and he was the focus of the other four candidates.  Currently, Newt Gingrich trails Mitt Romney by only 8 points in recent South Carolina polls.  The South Carolina GOP primary will be held on January 21st.  There are 25 delegates at stake in the South Carolina primary.

Iowa Presidential Debate -

The Iowa Republican Presidential debate gave the candidates a chance to debate the issues.  The six Republican candidates only have four weeks to campaign before the January 3rd Iowa Caucus.  Currently, Gingrich is the front-runner and he drew fire from the other candidates.

Barney Frank To Retire -

Congressman Barney Frank has announced that he will not seek another term. Frank has been in Congress for 16 terms and was expected to retire in 2014. Redistricting played a role in his decision to retire in 2012. Newly drawn congressional maps shifted his district out of his power base in Brookline and Newton.

Nevada Debate -

The Nevada GOP debate was the 8th meeting since May 5th for the Republican candidates.  The candidates tax plans took center stage with the Cain 9-9-9 plan coming under fire.  Texas Governor Rick Perry announced that he will be releasing his tax plan which is expected to be a flat tax plan.  The Perry plan is expected to be similar to a plan supported by Steve Forbes.

Florida GOP Debate -

Republican Presidential  candidates squared off last night in their third debate in less than a month.  Social security and immigration were two of the main issues discussed in the debate.  Most of the action was between frontrunner Rick Perry and his closest rival Mitt Romney.  The Republican candidates will get to meet voters again today at a CPAC event in Florida.

Tea Party Debate -

On Monday, eight Republican Presidential candidates squared off in the CNN/Tea Party Debate.  The Tea Party debate took place in Florida which is expected to be a heated primary race.  Perry maintained his frontunner status with Romney and Bachmann questioning his stance on social security.  A win in the Florida primary could give Perry the Republican nomination.

Reagan Debate: Perry & Romney -

The debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library took shape as a showdown between Rick Perry and Mitt Romney.  Perry had taken the frontrunner status from Romney and perfomed well in his first Presidential debate.  There will be two more Republican Presidential debates in the month of September.  The locations will be in Tampa and Orlando Florida.

Bachmann Wins Straw Poll -

Michelle Bachmann won the Ames straw poll with 4,823 votes.  Ron Paul  came in second with 4,671 votes and Pawlenty finished third with 2,293 votes.  Rick Perry received 718 write-in ballots and is considered a top tier Republican candidate.  Perry announced that he will run for President on Saturday.

Bachmann Announces Candidacy -

Michele Bachmann announced that she is an official candidate for President.  The announcement came at the beginning of the CNN GOP Presidential debate.  The Republican field is still wide open but it is clear that Michele will be a top contender for the nomination.
