Barney Frank To Retire -

Congressman Barney Frank has announced that he will not seek another term. Frank has been in Congress for 16 terms and was expected to retire in 2014. Redistricting played a role in his decision to retire in 2012. Newly drawn congressional maps shifted his district out of his power base in Brookline and Newton.

Virginia State Senate Shifts To GOP -

The GOP needed to pick up two seats in the Virginia State Senate to gain control and they may have succeeded.  Republicans picked up one race and are ahead by 86 votes in another contest.  Republican control of  the State Senate would move the redistricting process forward and allow Republicans to hold on to their 8-3 advantage in Congressional races.

GOP Gains In North Carolina Redistricting -

The draft map for redistricting in North Carolina strongly favors Republicans.  The new districts solidify current Republican seats and place four Democratic seats into Republican leaning districts.  The four Democrats that are in danger of losing are Brad Miller, Heath Schuler, Mike McIntyre, and Larry Kissell.  The four districts supported McCain in 2008 and Bush in 2004.  Schuler may leave Congress to become the athletic director at the University of Tennessee.  The new districts were drawn by the Republican controlled state legislature.

Census Shifts House Seats -

There has been a major shift in political influence towards the south and west.  Census data indicates that Texas will gain 4 seats, Florida 2 seats, Georgia and South Carolina will also gain.  North Carolina is a state that will keep the same number of seats but will still experience a major swing towards the GOP.  Republicans control the North Carolina legislature for the first time since 1898 and that may create 3 Republican seats due to redistricting.  The shift will help Republicans solidify control of the House and will also benefit the Republican Presidential candidate.

Texas Gains Seats -

Texas is set to gain at least three and possibly four Congressional seats due to population growth.  Texas Republicans dominate the redistricting process for the state and are expected to pick up several seats in the process.  In general, Republicans are expected to gain 20-25 seats from the redistricting process nationwide.  Republican victories in key Gubernatorial races in 2010 will also play an important role in redistricting.

Redistricting Edge -

Republicans and Democrats are fighting to gain the redistricting edge that will yield Congressional gains in the 2012 election.  Republicans are investing heavily in five states that may bring 25-30 new Republicans to Washington in 2012.  The five states are Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Indiana, and Wisconsin.  Control of statehouses are extremely important in years surrounding the redistricting process.
