Financial Reform Procedural Vote –

Senator Reid filed a procedural motion this afternoon which sets up a vote to proceed to the Financial Legislation on Monday.  The vote will take place Monday night at 5:15 p.m. and if approved will move the legislation to the next step with or without bipartisan support.

Financial Bill To Pass –

Republican leadership is indicating that there is a strong chance of a bipartisan financial bill in the next few weeks.  Republican Senator Richard Shelby has stated that the two parties are conceptually together on 85% of the bill.  The $50 billion fund for failing banks is expected to be dropped from the legislation.

A top resource for political insiders is the Cook Political Report.  They provide insight and analysis on State and Federal races.  A quick look at their breakdown indicates that Republicans are expected to achieve gains in both House and Senate races in 2010.  Republican campaigns also have a stronger fundraising effort in the first quarter.

SEC Self-Funding –

Senator Schumer is calling for the SEC to be a self funded regulatory body.  The SEC would be funded through fees that it would collect.  This is one more item up for debate regarding the financial bill.

Pennsylvania Senate Polling –

The race for United States Senate in Pennsylvania has drawn a great deal of attention from pollsters.  The only problem is that every poll seems to yield a different result.  Polling data this far in advance of elections have historically been inaccurate.  Congressional Quarterly has an article on polling in the Pennsylvania Senate race.

SEC Scrutiny of ETFs –

Leveraged Exchange-Traded Funds are coming ubder closer scrutiny of the SEC.  The Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have also indicated that they may put stricter limits on position which could effect large ETFs.

Healthcare Bill Back To House –

The Hill reports that the healthcare bill is headed back to the house.  Senate Parliamentarian Alan Frumin sustained two objections by Republicans early Thursday.  The bill is expected to be passed by the House and the ruling by Frumin did not surprise officials.
