Republican Fiorina Leads Boxer –

Republican Carly Fiorina is expanding her lead in the polls over Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer.  Democrats need a win in California to help their efforts to hold a majority in the U.S. Senate.  A recent poll by Survey USA shows Fiorina with a 5% percentage point lead.

Bennet Wins Colorado Primary –

Colorado Senator Michael Bennet won the Democratic primary and will be facing Republican Ken Buck in the November election.  Senator Bennet is not heavily favored over Buck and this should be a very competitive Senate race.  Republicans need to win 10 seats to gain control of the Senate.

Republican Leads Ohio Race –

Republicans need 10 seats to take control of the U.S. Senate in the November election.  Rob Portman is running to replace Ohio Republican Senator George Voinovich and he currently leads in the polls.  John Kasich, the Republican candidate for Governor, is also expected to win in November.

Laffer WSJ Opinion –

Economist Arthur Laffer recently wrote an opinion article in the Wall Street Journal regarding taxation.  Art Laffer is known for his work on taxation and the creation of the Laffer Curve.  In the Wall Street Journal article, Laffer uses a JFK report to highlight the need for lower levels of taxation.

Rothenberg: Watch Pennsylvania –

Stuart Rothenberg writes articles on Roll Call and they should always be considered required reading.  The Rothenberg article highlights the importance of Pennsylvania this election cycle.  A big win for the Republicans in Pennsylvania could help propel them into the majority.  Rothenberg points out that 10 of 19 Congressional races are in play this year in Pennsylvania.  A strong showing by Corbett and Toomey at the top of the ticket could have an effect on the entire ballot.

Michigan Governor's Race –

The race for Governor of Michigan is set for a Snyder-Bernero showdown.  Republican Rick Snyder is the former head of Gateway Computers and Bernero is the Democratic Mayor of Lansing Michigan.  Michigan is an important swing state and a Republican victory could help set the tone for 2012.  The victory in New Jersey by Republican Chris Christie in 2009 is regarded as an important driving force for the 2010 election cycle.

Pence: Keep Bush Tax Cuts –

Republican Congressman Mike Pence argued for extending the Bush tax cuts on a show with Al Hunt.  Pence wants all tax cuts extended including those for families making more than $250,000.  The Obama admnistration and Congressional Democrats are taking the position that tax cuts for families making less than $250,000 should be the only cuts extended.

Basel Hearings Planned

Senator Dodd and Congressman Frank are expected to hold Congressional hearings on Basel bank regulations.  The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision eased some proposed regulations whuch are of concern to Congress.  Congressional hearings will work to improve discussion on the global regulatory environment.

Campaign Finance Bill –

Campaign Finance legislation failed to reach the 60 votes required to stop a filibuster.  The vote was 57-41 and it will likely end campaign finance legislation for this congress.  Democrats argue that the bill would provide more transparency and Republicans say that it benefits unions.

Tax Cuts Polling Data –

A recent Rasmussen poll indicates that tax cuts will play a larger role in the mid-term elections.  The mid-July survey showed that 68% of respondents consider tax issues to be very important.  That number is 10 points higher than a May survey on the issue.  Tax cuts are likely to gain more media attention in the coming weeks with Congress starting to tackle the expiration of tax cuts.

Raese Declares –

John Raese has declared for the West Virginia Senate seat held by Robert Byrd.  Raese has the financial resources to make the race a contested election.  Raese has made three runs for statewide office in West Virginia.

Republican Fundraising –

Republican fundraising is much stronger than Democrats this election cycle.  The fundraising advantage is apparent in open seats for the House and Senate.  Currently, there are 42 House seats and 14 Senate seats that do not have an incumbent running for re-election.  Republicans are also showing strength in the most competitive districts.
