Election Day Swing Dancing –

Presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have been spending the remaining moments of their campaigns in swing states.  Recently, Republican candidate Mitt Romney  was campaigning in Ohio and later in Pennsylvania.  Obama visited Milwaukee Wisconsin before heading over to Ohio.  There are 10 electoral votes at stake in Wisconsin and 18 in Ohio.  Battleground states also include Virginia with 13 electoral votes and Florida with 29.  There are also close Senate races in Florida, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Wisconsin 2012 –

Wisconsin has good food and great people but it isn’t across the street.  The Scott Walker recall election had supporters from across the country visiting the swing state in early June.  The November election will not have nearly as many out-of-state supporters redeeming their frequent flier miles.

The US Senate race between Tommy Thompson and Tammy Baldwin is still too close to call.  A Rasmussen Reports poll had Thompson ahead by only 2 percentage points.  A Thompson victory would need a high voter turnout from suburban Milwaukee counties.  Thompson may also benefit from a strong turnout of Catholic voters.

Currently, Obama is ahead in most polls and is likely to win the state.  Obama leads Romney by 3% and 6% in two recent NBC/WSJ/Marist polls.

Two closely watched Congressional races are in the 7th and 8th districts.  Republicans are expected to win both contests on Tuesday.  Redistricting made the 7th district slightly more Republican and the 8th district covers northeastern Wisconsin which is most likely to vote Republican.

Ohio 2012 –

Ohio has 18 electoral votes at stake in the Presidential election.  Recent polling data indicates that Obama has a slight lead over Romney.  A CNN poll has Obama ahead by 4 percentage points and a Survey USA poll has Obama leading by 3 points.  Three counties that are closely watched are Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Hamilton.  In 2004, Bush won Hamliton county by over 20,000 votes but lost Franklin by almost 50,000 votes and Cuyahoga by over 226,000 votes.  In 2008, McCain lost Hamilton by almost 30,000 votes, Franklin by over 115,000 votes, and Cuyahoga by over 250,000 votes. Bush won Ohio in 2004 and Obama won the state in 2008. One of the keys to a Republican victory in 2012 is a high voter turnout from Santorum strongholds in eastern Ohio.

In the US Senate contest, Brown is leading in recent polls. A Rasmussen Reports poll has Brown leading by 4 percentage points and a CBS News/Quinnipiac poll has Brown ahead by 9 points.  Republicans need 51 seats to take control of the US Senate if Obama wins the Presidential election.

First Presidential Debate –

The first of three Presidential debates takes place tonight in Denver Colorado with Jim Lehrer as the moderator.  Mitt Romney is looking for a strong performance in the debate which might improve poll numbers.  Currently, polls indicate that Romney is slightly behind Obama in the state of Colorado.  Romney also trails Obama in Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Virginia.  The largest battleground poll deficits for Romney are in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.  Republican Senate candidates are polling much stronger in battleground states such as Virginia and Wisconsin.

Early Voting –

The standard get-out-the-vote (GOTV) drive does not apply in modern elections.  Voter turnout from early voting may account for over 30% of total votes cast for President.  Get out the vote drives are crucial in battleground states such as Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.  Early voting was scheduled to begin September 20th in Wisconsin and September 22nd in Virginia.  In 2008, early voting accounted for 78% of total votes in Colorado.

Paul Ryan Hits Campaign Trail –

Paul Ryan hit the campaign trail in Iowa on Monday afternoon.  Ryan is fresh off a massive rally in his home state of Wisconsin over the weekend.  Mitt Romney selected Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential running mate on Saturday morning in Virginia.  The selection of Paul Ryan will play well with economic Conservatives and should boost fundraising for the campaign.  Ryan will also improve poll numbers in midwestern battleground states.

Wisconsin Republican Senate Primary –

Wisconsin is the focus of the Republican party for the second time in three months.  Republican Governor Scott Walker won the recall election in early June and next week Wisconsin Republicans will vote for their Senate candidate.  The Wisconsin Republican Senate primary will be held on Tuesday, August 14th.  Recent polling data from Marquette University and Public Policy Polling indicate that the race is too close to call.  Only a few percentage points separate Thompson, Hovde, and Neumann.  Polling data for the general election have Tommy Thompson as the strongest Republican candidate against Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

Electoral College Tie –

A recent CNN article discussed the possibility of an Electoral College tie in the Presidential race.  A tie would occur if Mitt Romney and Barack Obama each receive 269 electoral votes.  There are several scenarios that could lead to a tie in the Electoral College.  A few states that are key in the Presidential race are Virginia, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.  The race is decided in Congress if both Romney and Obama gain 269 electoral votes and the electors stay with their candidate.  Congress would meet in early January to elect a President and Vice President.  The House of Representatives would elect the President and the Senate would elect the Vice President.  That could result in a Republican President and a Democratic Vice President.
